But what this year’s Oscar fashion was about? The thing is that there weren’t many (or any?) fashion faux-pas so I can’t badmouth anyone. Instead, there were lots of pastels and neutrals that make a spring 2010 color trend, lots of sparkle which is another trend and of course a red carpet must-have. There were also blue gowns, metallic ones and gowns with floral accents. As far as hair, stars basically chose elegant top knots, buns and chignons.

As for a spring summer 2010 season: orange is a colour that will bring the attention to your lips. It’s bright, it’s powerful and absolutely trendy. This intense color comes in an array of vibrant hues which is a must for spring. MAC Senior Artist Lynsey Alexander’s advice: “Orange looks best against a nude tanned olive skin with lots of black mascara and little else”.

Stella McCartney, Jean Paul Gaultier and – especially – Ralph Lauren prepared a strong dose of denim for their spring summer 2010 collections. Even though the head-to-toe denim look is usually a fashion “don’t”, it’s no longer a shame to wear it this way (at least this season). I wouldn’t recommend mixing different denim styles and colors but it’s also very fashionable today so I think we should all get out our denim jackets, shirts, vests, shorts and skirts from the darkest nooks of our wardrobes.

Peek-A-Boo Denim Trend

One of the most important spring 2010 denim trends is denim jackets peeking out from underneath blazers (very fashionable!) and leather jackets. This layered look dates back to 1990s’ and I’m sure Tori Spelling and Jennie Garth have probably worn it somewhere in Beverly Hills 90210.

Ripped, Torn and Patched Denim

Even though it doesn’t look too elegant, ripped, torn and patched denim is going to rule spring 2010 streets around the world. It used to be a huge trend not long ago so you probably won’t need to buy a new pair of trendy ripped jeans. This type of jeans trend dates back to 1980’s so this is where you can get your inspiration from (and from celebrities like Victoria Beckham, Halle Berry and Nicole Richie who have been sporting this trend).

Fashion world mourns death of Alexander McQueen, whose provocative collections made him a global star. McQueen was found dead at his London home on Thursday, 11th February in what media said appeared to be suicide. Today it’s confirmed – he hanged himself in a wardrobe.

That day his store in Manhattan’s trendy Meatpacking District was closed and became a temporary shrine. People would leave flowers at the doorstep of his London flat. Stars including Kim Kardashian, Rachel Zoe, Katy Perry and Estelle have commented on Alexander McQueen’s death by posting tweets on their Twitter profiles. Naomi Campbell’s ‘Fashion For Relief’ Haiti Runway Show would also pay a tribute to McQueen’s death – she arranged for herself, his muse Daphne Guinness and six other models to close the show in the designs of the British fashion genious.

When I heard that McQueen was found dead and probably because of the suicide, I felt really sorry for him and for his decision. I asked myself in a kind of psychological way what led him to such an act to take his life away. He had it all: fame, success, fans, money. But he was probably feeling overwhelmingly lonesome just a day before his mother’s death anniversary. And shortly before he was due to unveil his latest collection in Paris but that’s just not the case. I mean he might be stressed out but it’s not the reason to kill himself.

Suicide was the act he already knew. I don’t know why he found it the ultimate solution to the problems but it’s true that a friend of his committed suicide three years before. It was reportedly Isabella Blow who helped him achieve his fashion success. I don’t believe he decided to commit a suicide suddenly, it doesn’t happen overnight. He was probably considering it until he finally did it.

Did we miss the signs he would send?

Sometimes I think people who are into fashion call ‘genious’ everything they don’t understand and I’m convinced that a typical human being who is happy with their life doesn’t actually understand McQueen’s latest fashions. Just take a look at the makeup of the models wearing famous hound’s tooth costumes during Fall 2009 fashion show. Their skin looked excessively pale and lips were just like covered with blood like after a murder.

His spring summer 2010 collection might not have been that bloody but it’s alarming too. He presented a woman as a sea mammal with a skin of sharks or dolphins wearing grotesque shoes. I think these patterns, as genious as they were might have reflected what was going on his mind and it’s just too much for a regular human being.

Taking a deeper look at his latest designs I would say there’s been a considerable dose of anxiety, pain and persistent existential thoughts. I still wonder why people from his closest environment didn’t notice that there was something wrong with Alexander? Did they have the right to blame it to his complex artistic soul leave it as it was? These are now the unanswerable questions.

For the spring summer 2010 season, the aim of bright and bold colours is to wear them alone or along with trendy nudes. Versace, Bottega Veneta and Marni suggest going head to toe with rainbow colours like mellow yellow or pistachio while designer Adam Lippes (from fashion house Adam) recommends a combo of contrasting pop colors and soft, natural pastels.

This idea of a perfect colour balance is being applauded by Yigal Azrouël who was inspired with springtime brights of Istanbul. The warm end and a cool side of Nanette Lepore’s collection brings back her childhood memories of country garden sunsets.
