The last collection of Alexander McQueen who commited suicide earlier this year was probably the most inspirational of all fall 2010 winter collections. The 16 shown outfits proved McQueen’s interest in Roman and Byzantine Empires. The outfits were almost finished when the designer was found dead.

Alexander McQueen‘s previous (spring summer 2010) collection consisted of the most outstanding and extraordinary digitally printed dresses that featured innovative reptile patters. These days he would harness IT technologies to create the first class digital prints. By preparing a fall 2010 winter collection he – on the other contrary – took advantage of handcrafts.

Alexander McQueen‘s great attention to details and unique ideas were widely discussed and appreciated. Some of his models looked like fashionable gladiators in rich embellished draped dresses, some like Byzantine princesses in stately caped gowns and some of them resembled the angels. All in all, the collection was simply stunning.

Burberry Prorsum Fall 2010 Winter Collection

With a Fall 2010 Winter collection, Burberry Prorsum‘s chief creative designer Christopher Bailey scored highest marks both from critics and clients. His collection most importantly consisted of aviator-inspired overcoats and parkas with oversized shearling collars – and they were all available instantly on their website.

“I was thinking of uniforms and cadet girls—but it all started when I looked at an aviator jacket in the archive. Then, as I started designing into it, I realized it could be as versatile as the trench—strong and sexy, masculine and feminine.” Christopher Bailey

Burberry Prorsum is one of my favourite fashion houses now not only because they have this cutie, Bailey, but just because the cutie is a genious of utility himself (I don’t mean gas or water but the comfort and practicality his clothes offer). Few seasons ago everyone was crazy about John Galliano but today critics realised women need clothes to wear not to look at them. Galliano’s Russian/Balkan folkloric Fall 2010 collection might be inspirational but has nothing to do with utility.

Apart from aviator jackets Burberry Prorsum presented contrasting lace dresses, the season’s best thigh high boots and body-con blouses in well balanced colours: mustard, raspberry and first of all – army green. It is a great background to the top-notch military-inspired parkas.

Camel coat is making its comeback. Last winter it was timidly presented by some designers and worn by celebrities including Alexa Chung but a camel coat had to wait until winter 2011 to make a real statement. As seen in Celine.
Cape is also very fashionable in winter 2011. It’s a lot of fun for me because I would always associate it with a Red Riding Hood. But it doesn’t have to be red, though. The more blanket-like a cape is, the better. As seen in 3.1 Phillip Lim.
Hoodie is a statement coat accessory that designers suggest to wear this winter. On your head, instead of a cap. As seen in Michael Kors.
Fur is always hot in winter. PETA fanatics, kill me or not but it is an eternal truth. Not only because Michael Kors’ shredded silver-fox anorak was something to die for but just because fur keeps your body…warm!

Winter coat trends from the runways

London: Burberry Prorsum showed the most successful version of the season’s popular military trend. Christopher Bailey presented surpringsly good-looking oversized shearling collars on aviator jackets.

New York: 3.1 Phillip Lim presented “a luxe black buckled cape, a collarless camel coat edged in black silk, a leopard-print shaved rabbit fur, or a hybrid shearling-and-tweed toggle coat.” But his designs still remind me of clothes worn by people from Cicely in “Northern Exposure”.

Paris: Karl Lagerfeld used probably more fur than other designers altogether – he made his models look like siberian bears in the middle of an iceberg (specially transported from Scandinavia) to create a very special background for his Chanel Fall 2010 Winter 2011 show .

Milan: Alberta Ferretti presented dozens of fit-and-flare silhouette coats (vast majority of them was black). Her coats featured big fur arms and all looked totally feminine.
